Why Ricky Pearsall is Exactly What Kansas City Needs

Thor Gjerdrum |

It’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs, and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, have become a dynasty over the last 6 seasons. Not only do they have the undisputed best quarterback in the league, but also a five-star offense that includes tight end Travis Kelce, running back Isiah Pacheco, and linemen Creed Humphrey and Joe Thuney. They additionally have a top-tier defense, which consists of rising star cornerback Trent McDuffie and arguably the best defensive tackle in the league, Chris Jones. There is always room for improvement however, and with the NFL Draft coming up on Thursday, and no need to use their first-round pick on the defensive side of the ball, as well as no need to draft a quarterback, running back, tight end, or offensive lineman, the best option for Kansas City is to take a receiver in the first round.

Despite winning the Super Bowl this past season, Kansas City led the league in dropped passes during the regular season, and had rookie receiver Rashee Rice not stepped up Kansas City may not even have made it to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, however, Rice is currently facing some legal issues that could result in up to 5 years in prison and his fate is uncertain. It is worth noting that the Chiefs were able to sign receiver Hollywood Brown during the offseason, who will no doubt be a vital piece of their offense next season. However, he hasn’t played an in-game snap with Patrick Mahomes yet and likely won’t be able to carry an entire receiving core no matter who’s throwing the ball. It is for these reasons that Mahomes needs a tough receiver who can line up in or out of the slot and vary the speed of his route breaks, a receiver like Florida’s Ricky Pearsall. Pearsall checks all the boxes when it comes to what Kansas City is looking for in a receiver, he’s fast and able to create separation, and arguably the toughest receiver in this year’s class. Pearsall will additionally most likely still be on the board by the time it reaches the 32nd overall pick, making him by far the best first-round option for the Chiefs.
