Nick Saban has accumulated 206 wins in his 17 years at Alabama. One of the most important attributes of that success is the truly impressive coaching tree that includes the likes of Jimbo Fisher, Mel Tucker, Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin, and many more head coaches and coordinators. Throughout his career, he has been able to turn around struggling coaches at Power 5 schools and in the NFL helping Alabama win and helping the coaches remake their careers. He has also been able to raise new coordinators in his system, positioning them to rise the coaching ladder and eventually win positions at other powerhouse schools. A big part of this success is due to his leadership and the culture of winning that he has instilled at Alabama.
A new addition to his staff could and should be Mike Vrabel, the recently fired head coach of the Tennessee Titans. After Alabama’s current defensive coordinator, Kevin Steele announced his plan to retire, a large vacancy on the staff opened up. Vrabel brings with him a pattern of staunch defenses who are disciplined and tackle well. His record as a head coach demonstrates his ability to turn around a team with minimal resources. Player personnel decisions stripped him of some of his key defensive talent which is why they have struggled mightily in recent years. If he were to become the new DC at Alabama, player personnel would never be an issue. Though offers from NFL teams may come his way, it would be in his best interest to undergo a rehab assignment in the house of Saban.
