Springball is all over for the LSU Tigers and the USC Trojans. The LSU offense shined in their spring game and both quarterbacks displayed great decision making. It was the opposite for the Trojans, as the defense stole the show. With four picks, the defensive backs showed major improvement from last season. The defense overall looked way better than last year for USC.
One of the big headlines going into next season is the opening weekend faceoff between the Trojans and the Tigers. Both teams were disappointing last year, however, USC was much worse. Both had prolific offenses and horrible defenses. The reason LSU won nine games to USC's seven was because of their Heisman-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels and their star receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr..
USC had Caleb Williams, but the skill talent significantly declined from the season before and the offensive line lost a lot of key pieces to the draft and the medical tent. The defense was also much worse at USC than at LSU.
It is always tough to look at spring games too seriously. They are mainly meant for fans to see transfers or freshman make some fun plays. However, if you look more closely, you can see players, position groups, and even schemes that struggled. For LSU, that was the entire defense. The backs seemed out of position, the linebackers looked slow, and the defensive line created minimal pressure. The offense had a field day.
For USC, it was different. The defense looked good, creating pressure and turnovers. The only group that looked bad was the quarterbacks who need significant work going into the season.
The LSU defense had so many issues some that looked like they couldn't be fixed. It was not the same for USC, though, as the only struggling group, the quarterbacks, have the QB whisperer as their head coach.
After spring practice, USC should be the favorite in their matchup versus the Tigers.
