Top Three Super Bowl Contenders

Tyler Stearns |

The NFL Playoffs start tomorrow and we will be taking an early look at some of the favorites to win in New Orleans. Here are The Take's top three Super Bowl contenders.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs Kansas City looked good - not great - all year long. They won many close matchups against teams they should've blown out. They were also aided by referee decisions many times throughout the year, most notably versus Atlanta and Cincinnati. But it's Patrick Mahomes, it's Andy Reid, it's the Chiefs, they're inevitable. Even last year, they looked shaky in the regular season, but they tightened up when it came to the playoffs. The run game should improve after Pacheco has some time to rest, and the defense will have another week to regroup and figure out a way to attack their opponents. Kansas City should be the clear favorite to win it all.

  2. Detroit Lions Experience is the only issue with this team, aside from injuries. Detroit has been stellar all season long. Both their offense and defense have looked great against top opponents. Jared Goff has revived his career there and Jahmyr Gibbs has been a breakout star. This team is young, however, and a bit inexperienced in the playoffs. They made a deep run last season and nearly made it to the Super Bowl, but the 49ers clawed their way back in Santa Clara. If the Lions can replicate their performances against the Vikings and Packers in the second half of the year, while also not giving up points as easily as they did against the Bills, then this team will be scary. But we will see how much the injuries and newness to the playoffs will affect them.

  3. Philadelphia Eagles Philadelphia is about right in the middle of these two teams regarding familiarity with these situations. They have made it to the Super Bowl in the past two seasons and have made some deep playoff runs with Hurts. But in years past, they didn't have the run game that they do now with Saquon Barkley. And in years past, their defense was never as dominant at the line of scrimmage as it is now. Headlined by Jalen Carter, this group is one of the best in the league and loves to get after the QB. They stop the run well too. The defensive line will be a game-changer for the Eagles and will likely be the reason for a trip to Caesar's Superdome.
