The Raptors' season began on a disappointing note, with a slow start that saw their Eastern Conference ranking drop greatly. This setback hurt them early, leaving them with a poor record. However, a pivotal decision altered the course of their season, showing the organization's commitment to success. The record has not necessarily displayed that shift, but the Raptors are moving in the right direction.
First off was general management. OG Anunoby, one of the team's cornerstone defensive pieces who offered offensive versatility, had been involved in trade rumors for years. The Raptors decided to trade him to the Knicks for Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barret. Though Anunoby's loss was felt by the team and its fans, it was a move that was needed.
Barrett and Quickly wasted no time in making a significant impact on the young Raptors squad. The duo quickly found their rhythm, helping the team's overall record and elevating the level of play both offensively and defensively.
Despite the recent uptick in hope, the Raptors face an uphill battle to secure a playoff spot. However, there's a sense of optimism surrounding the team, fueled by the belief that the trade is going to help them win games.
RJ Barret has performed well in the last few weeks, most notably against the Warriors with a 37-point outing. Immanuel Quickley has proved to be a good addition too, as his efficiency and hustle stats are impressive. Furthermore, Scottie Barnes has been playing well, showing his potential to be one of the top players in the NBA.
Though not consistent enough yet, certain games that the Raptors have played show the potential that they have to be a force in the East. With the confidence amongst the players growing, along with the passion shown by Darko Rajaković and the support from the fans has rebuilt the culture of Toronto. Perhaps in years to come we may see a repeat of the 2019 team, with new stars in the spotlight.
I'd disagree.
