Today is the United States' Independence Day, July 4th. It marks the date America became independent from their British overseers. Celebrating this holiday has become a massive tradition in the US, bringing out the patriotism of many of its citizens. Let's look at the most iconic moment from some of America's biggest sports leagues.
College Football - Kick-Six "Chris Davis is at the 20, 25, 30, 35, 40,45, OH MY GOD, AUBURN IS GOING TO WIN THE FOOTBALL GAME." Chris Davis's infamous kick-six is the most famous play in college football history. Alabama was the number one team in the nation before the matchup with Auburn sitting at fourth. The Tigers had to enact revenge after their embarrassing defeat (49-0) the year prior. On the last play of the game, Alabama had a chance to win with a 50+ yard field goal. The kicker missed, and Chris Davis took the ball 109 yards to the endzone to cap off the greatest final play in CFB history.
NFL - Odell Beckham Jr. One-Handed Grab Odell's one-handed catch versus the Cowboys is the most famous play in NFL history. Though it may not have been much more than a touchdown in a regular season game, the play itself was magnificent. Defenders draped all over him, he shook away and stuck his arm back, grabbing the ball with three fingers. The play became an overnight sensation. Soon, every kid in America was saying, "Odell me!"
NBA - Blocked by James The Golden State Warriors record-breaking 73-9 season was incredible. Klay Thompson, Stephen Curry, and Draymond Green were playing some of the best basketball of their lives. They cruised through the playoffs and met LeBron and the Cavaliers. After going up 3-1, all hope was lost for Cleveland. However, after two amazing performances by Kyrie Irving and LeBron James, they found themselves in a game seven. The match was back and forth, with both teams making crucial baskets down the stretch. In the end, though, the Warriors had a chance to pull ahead with a layup. Steph Curry and Andre Iguodala streaked down the court and looked to have an open layup, but LeBron James beat them to the chase and blocked the layup. The Cavaliers went on to win the game.
College Basketball - Villanova's Game Winning Three Kris Jenkin's infamous game-winning three versus North Carolina in 2016 will never be forgotten. North Carolina had gone down the court and managed to score a double-clutched three-pointer with 5 seconds on the clock. Arcidiacono took the ball up the court for the Wildcats and tossed the ball back to Jenkins who buried a three with no time left on the clock.
MLB - Kirk Gibson's Walk-Off Home Run Kirk Gibson's walk-off home run is one of the best plays in sports history, regardless of America. After battling a torn hamstring, he decided to play game one of the World Series for the Dodgers. Stepping up to bat, visibly injured, he smashes the ball out of the park, leading the Dodgers to take game one of the series of which they would eventually win. His famous fist pump celebration has gone down in infamy. HAPPY 4TH! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
