Let's Pump the Breaks on Scottie

Conor Perry | The 2024 golf season is coming to an end with only the FedEx Cup playoffs and tour championship left. It has been a wild year with Bryson Dechambau’s US Open victory at Pinehurst, Xander Shauffeles's two major wins including the PGA Championship and the British Open, and the player who has had the most success: Scottie Sheffler. Scottie has won 7 signature events, a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic games, got arrested, and warmed up for a major in his jail cell to shoot a 66. Oh yeah and won the Masters. He hasn’t missed a cut this year and has been in the top 20 for every event besides one. Scottie Sheffler is on a generational run and I believe I will continue for many years to come. The one criticism that Scheffler constantly receives is his putting. Scheffler week in and week out will give a great performance off the tee, into the green, and around the green. On the green is where he seems to struggle. Last season he was at the top of every category but middle of the road to below average in shots gained on putting. This year has been different but shaky putting at the U.S Open which could give us a glimpse of a potential downfall.

A Tiger Woods-like season is a constant comparison when talking about Sheffler’s 2024 run, but it might be a bit too early. Tiger at the peak of his powers completed a grand slam. Scottie has yet to win another major besides the Masters which perfectly suits his game. Scottie has to win more than just the Masters to rival a prime Tiger Woods year. So far, that hasn't been the case, but Next year may be his shot to reach that status.
