Chelsea has been a trainwreck of a team for the past two years. They have gone through numerous managers and have sat at the bottom half of the table for most of each season (2022-23 they finished 12th, 2023-24 they sit 11th). The players, the managers, and even the owners do not seem in sync. Ever since their Russian ownership was forced to sell the club it has all gone south. So how do you fix the Blues?
Number one, you keep the manager. One major issue with the club has been coaching. The tactics haven’t been working and have pushed them down on the table. Potchettino has fixed some of that, but it certainly isn’t perfect. Nonetheless, it is way too early to get rid of him. He has won some big games, taking them to the final of the Carabao Cup and the semifinal of the FA Cup. He has improved Chelsea’s form in the league and it is only a matter of time until they figure things out. Getting rid of him would just repeat the cycle of mediocrity and even failure that Chelsea has become accustomed to recently.
Number two, make signings you need, not want. There are only a few positions on the team that should not be touched or aided in the summer transfer window. Those positions are CAM (Cole Palmer), RB (Malo Gusto and Reece James), and CF (Christofer Nkunku and Nico Jackson). Otherwise, the team needs to give Mudryk a veteran presence at the LW to help him develop for the future. A RW is needed so Cole Palmer can move a bit more centrally. Noni Madueke is good but needs to develop longer. Other than RB, solid additions need to be added along the back line. Reinforcements to the midfield should be a priority too. To remain in cooperation with FFP, Chelsea would need to get rid of players. The likely choices are Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling, or even Reece James. James is too injury prone to rely on and Gusto has been playing well this season. If offers come in for Ben Chillwell or Conor Gallagher and if they are high enough, Chelsea should accept them. The total transfer net spend shouldn’t exceed 100 million euros.
The team looks to have heart. There just needs to be some systemic changes throughout the team and the fans need to stick behind their club. Up the Blues!
