Last year's breakout teams came in the form of the Missouri Tigers and the Washington Huskies. They were both supposed to be good, but no one expected Washington to go to the playoff and Missouri to beat Ohio State in an NY6. Let's take a look at some potential breakout teams this year.
Wisconsin Badgers
The Badgers had a successful transfer portal this year, bringing in some key offensive and defensive players. They had a mediocre year in Fickell's first season but showed flashes of improvement throughout 2023. If they can give Alabama a fair fight and win big games in the B1G, they will solidify themselves as one of the more improved teams in college football.
2. Tennessee Volunteers
The Volunteers had a subpar season last year considering their success in 2022-2023. Joe Milton was not the right guy for the quarterback position. Now, heading into this season, they will start Nico Iamaleava. He showcased his rushing ability in the bowl game and his passing upside. He is likely to be more careful with the ball than Milton. If Tennessee can figure the defense out, expect the Volunteers to be a surprise CFP candidate this upcoming fall.
3. Auburn Tigers
Auburn ended the season against Alabama in upsetting fashion last year. The famous throw by Jalen Milroe to Isaiah Bond in the back of the endzone ruined their chances of upsetting the Tide. However, in that game, they showcased a lot of upside. Their defense was staunch and their running game was successful. If they can figure out their passing attack, the Tigers will be a team to watch for next season.
4. Colorado Buffaloes
Colorado had a pretty disappointing season last year. Despite the publicity brought on by Deion Sanders, they finished 4-8 and last in the PAC-12. This season they are going to the Big 12 and will have what seems like a much easier schedule. They brought in some great offensive and defensive line pieces and have some recruits from the 2024 class who should help out immediately. They keep their two stars, Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, who will add some star power to the offensive. If they can be consistent, they have a shot to win at least seven games.
5. Miami Hurricanes
This one might not seem as surprising. The Hurricanes should have been good for the last 20 years, but just have not. They have had mediocre team after mediocre team even with all the five-star talent they get. This year though, things should be different. They got Cam Ward from the transfer portal, a great dual-threat quarterback. They had an amazing recruiting class and had some other key transfers. They should be likely to break out, however, if they don't, then it is likely that Cristobal will be fired.
