The Barcelona-Nico Williams saga has officially ended this summer as the club has decided to choose Dani Olmo as this window's signing. The attacking midfielder had an exceptional Euros with Spain, one of the tournament's Golden Boot winners. He showcased his incredible dribbling, passing, and shooting in each match.
Barcelona made the decision and it came with a lot of scrutiny. Though Olmo is a great player, he doesn't fill the hole in the Barca attack. The left-wing is the one position for the club that needs to be filled properly. They tried putting Raphinha there and it was slightly successful, but they have decided not to buy Joao Felix which hurts their depth. Ansu Fati is back from his loan at Brighton and should provide some help to the position. But a change was needed there and they decided to address a position that is likely their strongest. The attacking midfield at Barcelona boasts the likes of Pedri, Fermín, and Gundogan. Adding another name to that list seems unnecessary.
Lots of people forget to see that Olmo can play on the left, though. It certainly isn't his best position, but he can do it. The club probably looked at Pedri's injury record along with the left-wing issues and wanted a player who could fill both roles. Though the decision isn't necessarily what all Barca fans wanted, it will pay dividends in the future.
