The Boston Celtics have won the NBA Finals after defeating the Dallas Mavericks in a five-game series. Boston has won a record 19 NBA Finals, their first since 2008. Jaylen Brown won Finals MVP after averaging nearly 21 points per game and being crucial in the late stages of each match.
The Mavericks were playing amazing before the Finals. They had dominated their previous opponents in the Western Conference and looked poised to contend for the championship. Unfortunately, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum's dominance and the influence of the other role players led the Celtics to beat Dallas.
For neutral NBA fans, the Playoffs became less interesting after the Western and Eastern Conference Semifinals. Each series was less than five games and each winning team dominated throughout their respective series.
What makes it more unfortunate is how entertaining the playoffs were before the Western/Eastern Semis. The headliner was the Minnesota Timberwolves versus the Denver Nuggets, a seven-game series that ended in an emphatic Minnesota win. The Mavericks versus the Thunder and the Clippers were both great series too. For the Celtics, though, they blew through every opponent with relative ease.
The Celtics proved that the superteam model in the NBA doesn't work. The franchise has obtained its star players from the draft and has developed them into some of the best in the league. Their coaching has been phenomenal since 2018 and they have been in contention for titles ever since. As we saw with the Suns, the Lakers, the Clippers, and other teams buying up stars never works. It has rarely ever delivered championships. The Celtics are a perfect model for the modern successful NBA Franchise and they now have evidence for it.
